Katie & garrett
Prepare yourself for such a sweet story. I've known Garrett since high school and our families are super close friends. He texted me one day asking me to take pictures of his proposal to Katie and I swear my heart skipped a beat!! My answer was a huge YES of course- but then the nerves set in.
A surprise engagement shoot?! At the time, this was the most intense portrait photography I had ever shot. I only had experience taking photos of my friends around campus but I had never posed couples before so as you read on, that's where my excessive nerves were coming from. I'm so thankful though, because through this surprise engagement shoot I learned so much.
I wanted these pictures to turn out beautifully for them. After all, it was the biggest moment in their lives at that point! And I'm so happy I got to be right there for it.
We staged it like this: I sent Katie and Garrett a group text asking if I could do a couples shoot with them in order to add some fresh photos to my portfolio. Mind you, Garrett wanted to propose around their dating anniversary which falls in the middle of February, and we were also in the middle of Iowa. Did Katie think I was crazy for wanting to do an outdoor shoot with them for my portfolio? MOST LIKELY.
Anyway, the day and time came. Garrett and I had previously discussed using chalkboard signs so I brought the supplies with me. I gave Katie the prompt of: "what do you love most about Garrett?" and then on Garrett's sign of course, he was writing the words that he would ask only moments later.
The time came for Garrett to get down on a knee and ya'll I think I might have been more nervous than he was! But wow, it turned out to be such a magical moment. I really couldn't believe it was all playing out right before my eyes.
I am forever grateful to Katie + Garrett for allowing me to be a part of such a huge moment for them. It was also a big moment for me in growing within my photography. Now it's time to go get married!
